Continue ShoppingEvery March 8th is International Women's Day. It's a global day of recognition celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls. It's also for raising awareness of the work that's left to be done.
Some feminist movements suggest that the day has become too commercial and has lost its political ideology. However, we are in favour of celebrating women on this auspicious day. How do we do this? With flowers, of course! Specifically, the Italian Mimosa.
Why the Italian Mimosa?
Behind the gesture of giving this flower to women in Italy, there is a historical reason. In 1946, two activists – Rita Montagna and Teresa Mattei – fighting for equality of women, suggested that a way to celebrate the first Women’s Day, known as "Giornata Internazionale della Donna", was to offer branches of mimosa to other women as a sign of respect and support.
While historians cannot agree if this is exactly when the tradition started, there is documented evidence that men in Rome gave the flowers to their wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters as a sign of love and appreciation.
Nowadays, women also hand the flowers to other women as a sign of solidarity and respect. It’s not unheard of for the woman sat behind the counter of the local post office or at the supermarket checkout to be given sprigs of mimosa by female customers.
The Mimosa (Acacia Dealbata) represents the feminine world. This flower looks delicate and has a beautiful fragrance. Despite this, they are able to thrive in hostile environments.
This year, International Women's Day falls on Monday March 8. Due to the shop being closed on both Sundays & Mondays, we are celebrating from Tuesday March 2 to Saturday March 6. We are schedule to receive beautiful Italian Mimosas on both March 2 & March 4 along with the highest quality spring flowers from Holland and all over the world.
